#7 Bearcats Need Major Comeback to Defeat Rival Hunter, CUNYAC Win Streak at 38

The #7-ranked men’s volleyball team needed a major comeback
to defeat their rivals Hunter College Hawks in five sets in a CUNY
Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contest on Tuesday night at the Hunter
Sportsplex in New York City.
With the result, Baruch improves to 21-10 on the overall regular
season schedule and a perfect 10-0 in the CUNYAC standings. They
also stretch their conference win streak (regular season &
postseason) to 38 straight matches.
The Hawks (12-11, 8-2 CUNYAC) stunned the Bearcats early by taking
the first two sets with scores of 25-23 and 28-26. Hunter hit .450
in winning the first set of the evening.
The Bearcats never lost their composure and rallied by winning the
next two sets with scores of 25-23 and 25-21 to set up the exciting
fifth-set tie-breaker. Baruch took control and edged the Hawks,
16-14, to pull out the exciting victory.
Pablo
Oliveira, the current CUNYAC and AVCA Player of the Week, had
another monster effort with a double-double of 26 kills (.314), 13
digs and eight blocks.
Jesus
Echevarria also had a double-double with 49 assists and a
team-leading 14 digs. Vincent
Cruz totaled 12 kills with a solid .429 hitting
percentage, while CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Steven
Coniglio finished with nine kills and six blocks.
Eric Barty led Hunter with 24 kills (.409), while Stanley Martinez
dished out 59 assists.
The Bearcats, who moved up two spots this week to number seven in
the national AVCA Division III rankings, will return to action on
Thursday, March 3rd, in a rescheduled CUNYAC match against Brooklyn
College (moved up from March 15). First serve in Brooklyn is
scheduled for 6:00 pm.
