#8 Bearcats Start Slow, Finish Strong to Defeat #15 New Paltz State in Four Sets

The #8-ranked men’s volleyball team defeated #15-ranked New Paltz State Hawks in four sets in a battle of AVCA Div. III Top 15 teams on Thursday night in New Paltz, New York.

The visiting Baruch Bearcats (26-12) stumbled early as they lost the first set, 25-14, as New Paltz State (16-11) recorded a strong .550 hitting percentage to take the early advantage at the Hawk Center.

The Bearcats regrouped in the second set to hit .545 to win, 25-20, to even the match at one. They continued their momentum to win the next two sets by competitive scores of 25-23 and 25-23 (.481) to walk away with the important non-conference road victory.

Overall, they totaled 52 kills this evening for a .286 hitting percentage, while New Paltz State finished with 49 kills for a .283 hitting percentage.

Pablo Oliveira, the CUNYAC and NECVA Player of the Week, led the attack with 20 kills (.415) and six total digs.

The team also received solid hitting from their freshmen duo of Ray Satagaj (9 kills, .400) and Steven Coniglio (7 kills, .500), while sophomore Jesus Echevarria dished out 40 assists.

Freshman Nick Smith led the team with seven digs on the defensive end.

Keith McDonald led New Paltz State with 13 kills and five digs.

The men’s volleyball team will return to action on Saturday, March 19, when they will travel to Boston Massachusetts to compete in a tri-match hosted by #12-ranked Emmanuel College. The Bearcats will play against Emmanuel (12:00 pm) and Endicott College (2:00 pm).
