Dolphins Battle By Southern Vermont, Run Winning Streak To Five

Riverdale, N.Y. – The
College of Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Volleyball team ran its
winning streak to a season-high five matches on Thursday night with
a 3-0 sweep of Southern Vermont. The Dolphins took care of the
Mountaineers by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-16. A pair of seniors
led the way for the Mount with David Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.)
recording 21 kills and classmate Michael Quinn (Wantagh, N.Y.)
handing out 36 assists.
After Mount Saint Vincent scored the first four points of the opening set, Southern Vermont played the Dolphins tight and went on a quick 5-2 run to close to within 15-12 in the opener. The Mountaineers would get to within two points later in the set, but the Mount used a pair of kills and an error from the visitors to take a quick 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set it was Southern Vermont’s turn to get off to a quick start as it jumped out to a 10-6 advantage. The Dolphins would answer with three straight kills from Guerrero to pull in front 12-11. The score would be tied three more times in the set, but the Mount would not give the lead back as it took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third and final set, the Dolphins did not trail and opened a quick 5-1 lead on the strength of a pair of Guerrero winners. Mount Saint Vincent would tally seven of the final 10 points in the set to secure the win and move to 2-1 at home this season.
Guerrero had a big night for the Dolphins with 21 kills and a .447 hitting percentage. He committed just four errors in 38 attempts and also recorded a pair of assists, four digs and two total blocks for the Dolphins.
Quinn totaled his second highest assist total of the season with his 36 helpers on the night. He also chipped in with two kills, two aces, a pair of digs and a block assist on the night. He posted at least 30 assists in a match for the fourth time this season on Thursday.
Michael Sin (Hicksville, N.Y.) had another strong match for the Dolphins with a match-high 14 digs to go along with a pair of kills. Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, N.Y.) nearly missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs for the Dolphins.
The Mountaineers were paced by nine kills from Anthony Barahona who also matched the team-high with seven digs. Anthony Ayala handed out 17 assists on the night and Connor Murray totaled five kills and a match-high five total blocks.
Overall on the night, Mount Saint Vincent hit .202 as a team and finished with 40 kills to 23 for Southern Vermont. The Mount also held the edge in digs 47-33, while the Mountaineers finished with 7.0 total team blocks to 4.0 for the Dolphins. Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Mount in the category with three.
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 10-2 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to remain unbeaten in Skyline Conference play on Sunday afternoon when they play host to NYU-POLY and Yeshiva. The first match of the day is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
