Red-hot Endicott stuns No. 12 MIT with comeback win
Boxscore
Beverly, Mass. – Two sets down and with
their backs to the wall, the Endicott men's volleyball rallied past
No. 12 MIT, 3-2, to hand the Engineers their first NECVA New
England division loss of the season. The Gulls (19-9, 11-2
NECVA NE) have won of nine straight and 13 of their last
14. MIT (21-6, 12-1) entered the game with a six match win
streak and seemed poised to add to it after taking the first two
sets. Endicott had other plans and, after squeezing out a win
in the third set, cruised in the fourth to set up the decisive
set.
The hosts carried the momentum into that final set, jumping out to a 6-4 lead. The Engineers leveled the set at eight following a kill by David Thomas (Carlsbad, Calif.), who was one of three players to finish with double-digit kills for the visitors.
Kills by Matt Devendorf (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Jeremy Siden (Natick, Mass.) pulled the Gulls ahead by two before Thomas connected again to cut the deficit in half. Endicott scored five of the next seven points, highlighted by Travis Netherton's (Waukegan, Ill.) kill which put the finishing touches on the upset.
Senior outside hitter Zeke Kubisch (Bethlehem, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 12 kills while Siden and Devendorf each added 11. Netherton chipped in 10 kills and nine total blocks in the win. The Gulls were particularly impressive at the net, led by junior middle blocker Joshua Bruno (Andover, Mass.). Endicott finished with 36 total blocks including a match-high ten from Bruno.
Junior libero Andrew Slocum (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) added to the defensive effort with a team-high 15 digs. Carter Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Jeremy Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) combined to hand out 44 assists in the win.
Freshman Ken Siebert (St. Louis, Mo.) led all attackers with 21 kills while classmate Billy Evans (San Diego, Calif.) added 16 in the loss. Thomas finished with 19 kills to go along with six digs. Tim Lee (Natick, Mass.) and Jeremy Velazquez (Chelmsford, Mass.) paced the Engineers with 14 and 15 digs, respectively. Lee also dished out a match-high 48 assists.
The result creates a log jam atop the division standings, as MIT leads second-place Endicott by just one game. Newbury lurks in third place, a game and a half behind MIT at 10-2.
The Gulls return to action on Thursday (March 17) when they travel to Regis at 7:00 pm. MIT looks to bounce back on Saturday (March 12) when it plays host to Daniel Webster at 10:00 am.
