Hunter Goes Down in Three to Baruch
Box
Score
On Tuesday night, February 9, the men's volleyball made the short
trip to Baruch College to face the #22 ranked Bearcats in their
fourth conference match on the season. A game-high 17 kills by
sophomore Braien
Otsla kept the Hawks in the match, but in the end Baruch
proved to strong on the night as they went on to record a 3-0
victory. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-7, 3-1 in CUNYAC while
the Bearcats move to 6-9, 4-0 CUNYAC.
The first set was close in the early stages, with Otsla recording
his first kill in the second point of the match. At 6-5, the
Bearcats reeled off seven consecutive points, six coming from
Steven Coniglio's serve, to open a 13-6 lead. They would use that
momentum to close out the set 25-15.
The Hawks took an early 3-1 lead in the second set thanks to a
pair of Baruch errors and another Otsla kill. The Bearcats would
tighten up their game quickly though, just as the Hawks started
making some errors of their own. Baruch soon built a 10-4 lead, and
the Hawks would come no closer than five the rest of the set as
they fell 25-19 to go behind two sets to none.
Hunter posed a real threat in the third set behind 15 team kills
and just four errors. Junior Eric
Barty led the way with three early kills, but neither
team led by more than three points at any. At 19-16 Baruch, the
Hawks won six points in a row, including five on Barty's serve, to
take a 22-19 lead. From there, Baruch's Pablo Oliveira scored a
kill to stop the streak before winning four points on his serve to
make it 24-22. From there the teams traded service errors and the
final set finished 25-23.
Next up for the Hawks is home match against CCNY. The match is set
for a 6 pm start on Thursday, February 11 at the Hunter
Sportsplex.
