Lasell Tops New Haven in Four

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men’s
volleyball team took an exciting second set on Friday night, but
dropped a four-game match at Charger Gymnasium. The final scores of
the contest were 16-25, 25-23, 11-25 and 19-25.
In the first set of the match, the visiting Lasers garnered a
quick lead that they would never relinquish. Lasell hammered 17
kills on 34 attempts for a formidable .324 attacking percentage.
Ben Hollies recorded two of the four kills for the Chargers, as the
home team dropped the opening set by the final score of 25-16.
The second set of the night featured a lightning fast start from
New Haven, as the Chargers jumped out to a 10-5 advantage. Hollies
sparked the hosting Chargers with three kills and an ace early on
in the game. The Lasers weathered the storm and fought back but a
resilient Chargers squad was up to the challenge. With the score
24-23 in favor of UNH, Hollies put the set away with a kill shot
with the assist to Ryan Earl. New Haven registered a season-high 14
kills in the game on 39 total attempts.
Unfortunately for the Chargers, Lasell bounced back with a
tremendous performance in the all-important middle game. New Haven
tallied a match-high 10 errors in the set, granting the Lasers an
easy triumph with a final score of 25-11. Lasell recorded seven
kills and just two errors on 16 total attempts for a .312 attacking
percentage.
In the fourth and final set of the night, the teams exchanged
points until the scoreboard read 11-11. Lasell then proceeded to
run off a string of eight straight points, grasping an
insurmountable 19-11 advantage. The Chargers fought to get back
into the game, but fell short by the final score of 25-19.
Hollies led the way for the Chargers, as the junior outside hitter
hammered 10 kills on 38 total attempts and seven digs. Senior Gregg
Brisbin added five kills on 19 attempts and Sean Donahue finished
with four kills and two blocks. As a team, UNH recorded 25 kills,
31 errors and 43 digs on the night.
Spencer Parker paced the Lasers with 14 kills on 31 total attempts
and seven digs.
With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 0-4 on the season. The
squad returns to action on Friday, February 25 against Albertus
Magnus College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Charger
Gymnasium.
