Medaille Hangs On in Five Set Thriller

(Buffalo, NY) – Just when it seemed that the 12th ranked Medaille men’s volleyball team would cruise to its third straight victory, their longtime rivals would have a different plan.  The D’Youville Spartans stormed back after dropping the first two sets to Medaille, countering with two consecutive set wins and forcing a decisive fifth set.  The Mavs would outlast the Spartans in the final game en route to a (3-2); (25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 20-25, 19-17) victory in UVC Divisional action.

The Mavs once again received a tremendous effort from junior Nick Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Canisius)(pictured) who followed up a (22) kill performance in his last outing, with a (24) kill night against the Spartans.  Senior setter Ryan Maxwell (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) guided the Maverick offense with (50) assists and chipped in on the defensive side with (5) assisted blocks.

Junior Matt Kremer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) finished with a team high (10) assisted blocks while Johnson came up with (7) block assists of his own.  Senior Dan Jackson (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) once again led his team with (13) digs to pad his career record total in that category.

The win is the Mavs third straight as they improve to (13-4) overall and (4-1) in divisional play.  They will head to Thiel College on Wednesday (3/2) for a 7:00pm showdown with the Tomcats.
