Nighthawks Fall to 14th Ranked Saints on Senior Night
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team nearly upset #14 Emmanuel College, Tuesday evening. Saints outside hitter Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) paved the way to victory with a match-high 37 kills.
Before the match, the Nighthawks honored seniors James Beck (Havre de Grace, Md.), Max Daley (Cranston, R.I.), Matt Talamantes (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Michael Biuso (South Setauket, N.Y.) for their four years of dedication to the men’s volleyball program.
The Nighthawks honored their four seniors by taking game one against the nationally ranked Saints, 25-22. Beck registered three kills while Talamantes added six assists. But the Saints were not going to be denied, responding taking games two and three by a combination of four points. In the two sets, Abrams tallied 12 kills and three total blocks (one solo and two assisted).
Looking to seal the deal in the fourth set, Abrams notched a set-high 11 kills but the Nighthawks answered. While Beck registered seven kills and three block assists, Daley was nearly perfect in the set with an .833 hitting percentage. Freshman Dan Davision (Howell, N.J.) matched Beck with three block assists as Newbury stormed back to knot up the match at two games apiece with the 29-27 win.
Once again, Newbury faced a tough mountain to climb in game five. Down by five, 14-9, the Nighthawks rallied off five straight points culminating with back-to-back block assists by Daley and Beck to tie up the contest at 14. For the next eight points there would be six ties and four lead changes before Abram sealed the match with his 37th kill of the night.
Newbury falls to 23-12 with the loss while Emmanuel improves to 23-6. The Nighthawks return to the court when they travel to Stevens Tech in Hoboken, N.J. for the Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Tournament where they will meet Philadelphia Biblical at 2:00pm.
