Thiel Splits At Lancaster

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Tomcat men's volleyball team split a pair of games on Saturday in Lancaster, Pa. Thiel defeated Lancaster Bible College 3-0 in the first game of the day and fell to Wentworth 3-1 in game two.

Thiel ended a six-game losing streak in their first game of the day as they defeated the Chargers of Lancaster Bible straight sets. Thiel got off to a quick start as they came out with a 25-19 win in the first set. They would then continue to roll as they held the Chargers to just 13 points and 10 points in the final two sets to pick up their second win of the season.

Sophomore outside hitter Dante McCoy (Reading, Pa., Holy Name) led the way on the offensive end with 11 kills and freshman setter Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa., Maplewood) had 31 assists. Defensively, Thiel was led by Andrew Pohlod (Gibsonia, Pa., Pine-Richland) who had 12 digs, and he also had six kills on the offensive end.

In the second game of the day, Thiel ran into some stiffer competition as they fell to Wentworth College 3-1. The Leopards jumped out quickly as the won the first two games 25-21 and 25-18, respectively. Thiel then bounced back and won game three 25-18. However, the Tomcats could not take another game as they fell 25-21 to fall to a 2-7 record on the season.

McCoy once again led the Tomcats with 23 kills and also had ten digs on the day. Hamilton also played very well in the game as he had 51 assists for the day. Defensively, Thiel had seven team blocks and junior outside hitter John Kahoohanohano (Wailuku, Hawaii, King Kekaulike) had 11 digs to lead the team.

"Everything is starting to come together like we'd planned...the boys just need to start executing with a few less unforced errors. When that happens - we're going to start winning some matches," said head coach Steve Brewer.

Thiel will play again tomorrow at Stevenson College in Stevenson, Maryland. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start time.
