Vassar Beats D'Youville and Falls To No. 2 Nazareth at UVC Crossover

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 6, 2011) -- The Vassar College men’s
volleyball team went 1-1 in the final day of the UVC Crossover
Tournament with a 3-0 win over D’Youville College and a
respectable 3-1 loss to the nation’s No. 2 ranked Nazareth
College on Sunday.
The Brewers (16-9, 3-3 UVC) return from Spring Break to host
Princeton University on Friday, March 18, at 4:00 p.m.
Nazareth College def. Vassar College 3-1 (25-19, 25-23,
20-25, 25-16)
Nazareth racked up 50 kills with and hit .484 in the first set and
.333 in the decisive fourth set to narrowly edge Vassar. Vassar

Fredericksen posted a match high 20 kills with a .405
hitting percentage. Senior Hans Schroeder led Nazareth with 16
kills and hit .500. Sophomore EJ Wells-Spicer tallied 45 set
assists and 10 digs for Nazareth and sophomore John
Konow led Vassar with 32 set assists and seven digs.
In the third set, Vassar raced out to a 7-1 lead and took
advantage of Nazareth’s .056 hitting percentage for a 25-20
win in the third set. Fredericksen had five kills in the set with
three in the final 10 points.
Nazareth took control of the fourth set after a 6-6 tie with a
five point swing on two aces by senior Brian Bunch and a pair of
Vassar errors. Vassar would not come within four points of the lead
and Nazareth sealed the match with a 5-1 run for the 25-16 win,
The Brewers had an opportunity to tie the match in the second set
as they took advantage of six service errors by the Golden Flyers
to take a 20-16 lead. Nazareth claimed the next four points to tie
it at 20-20 and closed the set on a 9-3 run on two kills by Brian
Bunch and four Vassar miscues.
In a hard-fought first set, Vassar went down 10-2 early and
Nazarzeth prevailed 25-19 with 17 kills on a .484 hitting
percentage.
Vassar College def. D’Youville College 3-0 (25-13,
25-20, 27-25)
Vassar totaled 45 kills with a .319 hitting percentage to 29 kills
and a .119 clip by D’Youville. Fredericksen led the pack with
18 kills and just one error for a .607 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Matthew
Elgin picked up 12 kills on .421 hitting with four block
assists and one solo block. Konow tallied 40 set assists.
Vassar trailed 20-18 in the third but kills by Fredericksen and
Elgin, a D’Youville error, and an Elgin ace put Vassar up
23-21. D’Youville fought back to a 23-23 tie with a kill by
Chris Temple and a service ace by Brett Peters. D’Youville
picked up key points to tie Vassar at 24-24 and 25-25 until the
Brewers ended the match 27-25 on kills by junior Lucas
Rathjens and sophomore Charles
Caldwell.
Vassar broke away with a 4-1 swing on three kills and a solo block
by Elgin for a 17-12 lead. Frederickson closed out the set 25-20
with a crosscourt kill.
The Brewers jumped out to an 8-0 lead and rode a wave of 14 kills
at a .565 hitting rate to a 25-13 first set win.
