#6 Christopher Newport Defeats N.C. Wesleyan 3-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University
volleyball squad took three straight sets from North Carolina
Wesleyan tonight in the Freeman Center. The win improves CNU to
26-2 and drops N.C. Wesleyan to 18-9.
Set scores for the match were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-16.
The biggest lead for the Battling Bishops came in the second set
when they went up 4-0 at the start. But the Captains battled back
winning four straight points with Kara Elder
(Charlottesville, Va.) serving to even the score at 4-4. The
Captains continued adding points two and three at a time until a
kill from Nellie Gaca (Virginia Beach, Va.) ended
the set at 25-15.
The Captains got up to a 12-7 lead in the third set before N.C.
Wesleyan called a timeout. Lindsay Stephens
(Lorton, Va.) took over serving and the Captains piled on seven
points in a row with three kills from Cory Harris
(Williamsburg, Va.), one from Chelsea McClure
(Montclair, Va.), one from Christie Fellows
(Vienna, Va.) and two attacking errors by the Bishops. N.C.
Wesleyan was able to pull back to within eight points but the
Captains stayed in control winning 25-16.
Harris led the Captains in kills on the night with 13 followed by
Elder with 11 and McClure with ten. Jessie
Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) had 48 assists, 14 digs and a
block. Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) led in digs with
17.
The Bishops were led by Meredith Smith with six
kills and Mackenzie Tingle with 17 assists.
Kelly George had 12 digs while Erin
Ausperger and Smith added a pair of blocks apiece.
Shana Ayers had three service aces in the
match.
The Captains return to action on Saturday as they travel to
Raleigh, N.C. to take on Peace at 12:00pm and Meredith at
2:00pm.
