Resilient Regals Take SCIAC Lead in Four Over Tigers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - In a match of the two remaining unbeatens in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Cal Lutheran volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory at Occidental in taking sole possession atop the standings.

Box Score: CLU 3, OXY 1 - F

Cal Lutheran built a sizeable margin behind in the opening set with serving runs from Rachel Smith and Jackie Russell, eventually doubling up the host Tigers, 20-10. Casy McWhirk cast the deciding blow as CLU earned a 25-14 first set win.

The Tigers felt no ill effects after dropping their first set in SCIAC play this season eventually returning the favor. Occidental opened set two by scoring the first six points forcing a CLU timeoute. The Regals battled back and following a long rally tied the frame, 16-16.

Cal Lutheran had an answer nearly every time before Occidental took the final two points of the set with freshman Stephanie Gann returning the favor, 25-23.

A momentum-shifting third set found the Regals with an early 6-1 lead, only to see the host Tigers reel off nine of the next 10 points to take a 10-7 lead. Tied 21-21, CLU's Allison Kerr took matters into her own hands by earning four straight points with kills.

CLU again need to come from behind to take the frame trailing 21-18. The Regals rallied again and took leads at 23-22, 24-23, 25-24, and 26-25. Rachel Smith put down the final kill of the set and the match giving Cal Lutheran a fourth-set and match victory, 27-25.

Cal Lutheran (9-3, 4-0 SCIAC) extended its win streak to nine matches and will host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
