Calvin Holds Off Kalamazoo College To Remain Unbeaten in MIAA Ranks
KALAMAZOO - The ninth-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team held off a determined Kalamazoo College squad Wednesday night at the Anderson Athletic Center, defeating the Hornets 25-16, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22. Calvin snapped Kalamazoo’s four-match win streak and improved to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the MIAA.
Calvin rolled through the first two sets, compiling a hitting percentage of .464 in set one and a hitting percentage of .419 in set two. Kalamazo’s defense then stiffened in set three however as the Hornets hit .306 and limited the Knights to just a .186 attack.
In set four, Calvin took a narrow lead at 13-12, then lost the lead at 14-13 only to come back and build a 24-21 advantage. The Hornets came back to take the next point to close to within two but Calvin freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) came up with an acrobatic cross-court kill to close out the set and the match for the win.
Rietema had 39 assists, eight kills and five block assists. Junior Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park/Chicago Christian HS) had 13 kills apiece. DeHaan had five block assists while Kamp had seven digs. Junior Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) had nine kills while sophomore Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had seven kills and five block assists.
Junior Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) had 16 digs and sophomore Kim Start (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) 10 digs. Freshman Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a big match with six digs and four service aces.
Calvin will now break until October 5 when it travels to Alma for a key conference match.
