TIFFIN, Ohio – Facing the #11th ranked team in the country, the Capital University women’s volleyball team knew they had an uphill battle with Ohio Athletic Opponent Heidelberg University. After the first two matches, it looked like Heidelberg would cruse to their first OAC win by defeating Capital 25-13 and 25-15. However, the Crusaders gave it all they had in the third game as they fell by a score of 27-25.
“We showed some heart and character tonight,” said head coach Pam Briggs. “We kept fighting to the end to get that upset and the girls showed some real promising plays.”
The Crusaders hung tough in the first game till the 10-7 mark after that they were unable to get close to the Berg and fell by a score of 25-13. Once again in the second game, the Crusaders kept the game close at 10-10, but Heidelberg’s dominance shined through and they were able to score four unanswered points putting them up 14-10. Later on, Heidelberg went on a seven-point run to put the game out of reach at 23-13 before winning 25-15.
For the first time all night, the Purple and White were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Crusaders never relinquished the lead until the game was knotted up at 25-25. From there the young team could not put together the push they needed to steal a game and fell 27-25.
The offense was led by freshman Sanaya El-Naggar (Mason, Ohio) who had nine kills and a .200 hitting percentage. Freshman Alyssa Angle (Covington, Ohio) had 20 assists, while junior Lauren Gauvreau (Columbus, Ohio) and freshman Elissa Foster (North Royalton, Ohio) each had 12 digs.
The Crusaders will be back in action this weekend when they will compete in the Purple and Gold Invitational. Their first game will be against Fredonia State on Friday, October 1st at 4 p.m.
