MADISON, Wis. - Edgewood College will enter next week with a
chance to nail down the Northern Athletics Conference title, but
they won’t have their school record winning streak to take
with them. Carroll University prevented the Eagles from winning
their ninth straight match with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 28-26)
non-conference victory on Thursday night at the Todd Wehr
Edgedome.
Carroll University (13-8) held the lead much of the first set, but
three straight kills by the Pioneers, including two by Heather
Kulibert gave Carroll a 20-16 lead. Edgewood College’s
Lindsey
Swansby scored an ace when her serve clipped the top of
the net and dropped over, to cut the lead to 23-21, but Megan
Turckes would score the Pioneers final two points on kills. The
Eagles’ Mallory
Palmer had six kills in the first set.
The second set was tied at nine when Carroll went on a 7-0 run to
take a 16-9 lead. Kulibert had three kills during the run and
finished with a match-high 14. The Eagles gave the home fans a
little hope at the end of the set when Colleen
Myers served off five straight points to trim a 24-16
deficit to 24-21, but Samantha Derynda scored a kill on the final
point to claim the set for the Pioneers
.
The rally at the end of the second set, may have given Edgewood
College (14-11) some momentum for the third. The Eagles opened up
an early 7-2 lead behind two kills and a service ace from Palmer.
However, the Pioneers regrouped quickly to tie the match at nine.
The rest of the set saw seven lead changes. Carroll University had
a match point at 24-23, but Dacy
Swansby put down a kill to extend play. The Eagles had a
set point at 25-24, but Amanda Trieloff scored a kill to tie the
match again. Finally, Emily Goebert scored a pair of service points
to end the match with a 28-26 final score in set three.
Edgewood College was led by Palmer in both kills and digs. Palmer
recorded her seventh double-double of the season and 10th of her
career with 12 kills and 15 digs. Jessica
Martin pounded out nine kills of her own, while Katie
Wedvic added five. Carroll University stuffed the Eagles
defensively with 10 total blocks.
Edgewood College will take to the road next week for three pivotal
Northern Athletics Conference matches against Concordia Wisconsin,
Dominican and Concordia Chicago. Victories in all three of those
matches would give Edgewood College their first conference title
since 1996. The Eagles (8-0 NAC) currently sit one match in front
of Concordia Wisconsin (7-1 NAC) and one and a half matches in
front of Dominican and Wisconsin Lutheran (7-2 NAC).
