ELMHURST, ILL.—Despite throwing a scare into No. 15-ranked Wis.-Oshkosh, the Central College volleyball squad came up 0-2 at the Elmhurst (Ill.) Invitational Friday night.
Host Elmhurst (18-9) topped the Dutch 25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24 earlier, then Wis.-Oshkosh escaped with a 14-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13 victory. The Titans have already clinched at least a share of their third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.
“Aside from the first game against Elmhurst, we played well,” coach Kent Clayberg said.
Against Wis.-Oshkosh (22-5), the Dutch did everything right except win. Middle hitter Kiley Meyers (junior, Grundy Center) had 11 kills while hitting .416 and had 11 blocks, including two solos. Outside hitter Amy Golly (junior, Ankeny) had 10 kills and hit .346 with five blocks. Middle hitter Haley Brillhart (junior, Pella) had nine kills and hit a sizzling .818.
Setter Maggie Snyder (junior, Alexandria, Minn. Jefferson HS) had 25 assists while Hannah Worrall (sophomore, Boone) had 19 assists. Libero Chelsea Grieger (junior, Pella) had 25 digs and Nichole McGrew (senior, Elk Run Heights, Don Bosco HS) had 15 digs.
“We just could not find a way to put them down at the end,” Clayberg said.
Central wasn’t quite as sharp against Elmhurst (18-9). Golly and right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (senior, Clive, Valley HS) had eight kills while outside hitter Caitlin Kouba (junior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) and middle hitter Katie Huff (senior, Loveland, Colo., Thompson Valley HS) had seven kills.
Snyder had 21 assists while Worrall had 16. Grieger had 30 digs and McGrew had 15.
Central (17-11) comes back at 10 a.m. Saturday against Wheaton (Ill.) then tackles No. 25-ranked Wis.-Platteville (19-3) at noon.
