Chicago Puts WashU On The Ropes At UAA Round Robin #1 Before Falling In Five

ATLANTA -- After dropping a five-set match to top-ranked Washington (Mo.) University, the 19th-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team rallied for a four-set victory over Brandeis University on the second and final day of the University Athletic Association Round Robin at Emory University.

Chicago took the first two sets against the defending national champion Bears (17-0 overall, 3-0 UAA) 25-18, 25-19, but Washington rallied to win the final three sets 25-18, 25-20, 15-10.

Sophomores Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) and Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) combined to hit 21 kills with a .367 attack percentage. Trela (pictured) hit 11 kills in 24 attempts, while Brander collected 10 kills in 25 swings. The middle blockers also combined on six blocks.

In the final set, Washington hit at a .381 clip (10-2-21) to .125 (6-3-24) for the Maroons.

Facing Brandeis University (10-7, 1-2) in Sunday's second match, Chicago (19-5, 2-1) lost the first set 25-21 before taking the next three 25-21, 25-16, 25-19.

Brander and senior Diandra Bucciarelli (San Diego, Calif./ Torrey Pines) led the Maroons' attack with 10 kills apiece. Brander also collected seven blocks.

Junior Lauren Tarpey (Greensboro, N.C./ Grimsley) finished with 39 assists, 11 digs, and three kills in seven attempts without an error.

Chicago will be idle until Tuesday, Oct. 12 when it makes its final appearance of the season at the Ratner Center against Concordia University Chicago at 7 p.m.
