Story Courtesy of the Cortland Athletics Site
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink
Valley) matched her career high with 20 kills and sophomore Katie
Wick (Cortland/Homer) added 12 kills as Cortland defeated Ithaca,
3-1, in a non-conference match. The Red Dragons (18-4) won the
first two sets, 25-18 and 23-25. Ithaca won the third set, 25-23,
but Cortland ended the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth
set.
Coyle also finished the match with 10 digs, while Wick led the
squad with four service aces. Junior Sheena Asibey (Brentwood)
added eight kills and four blocks and sophomore Kristen Guercio
(Smithtown/Smithtown East) totaled 40 assists, 11 digs and two
aces. Freshman Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) paced the
Cortland defensive effort with a team-high 14 digs.
Cortland never trailed in the first set, taking an early 4-0 lead
and extending it to 9-2 on a 5-0 run that featured three kills by
Wick. Ithaca pulled with 13-9, and got as close as 19-16 before
three straight points helped the Red Dragons find some breathing
room.
Although Ithaca (10-8) only led twice in the second set at 1-0 and
12-11, the set was tightly contested. The teams were tied eight
times, the last at 19-19. Kills by Wick and Coyle, followed by a
Kaitlyn Cooper (Webster/Webster Schroeder) block, gave Cortland a
22-19 lead and induced an Ithaca timeout. The Bombers responded
with a Sydney Folk kill and an Elizabeth Previte ace to close
within 22-21, but Cortland ended the set with two Wick kills and an
Ithaca attack error.
The third set featured nine ties, including a 21-21 deadlock after
a Cooper kill. Ithaca grabbed the lead on a Marissa Woodcome kill.
After the teams traded points, Ithaca completed the set with kills
by Previte and Kate Thoene.
Tied 3-3 in the fourth set, Cortland scored five straight points
– four on Ithaca errors – to take an 8-3 lead. With
their lead 12-8, the Red Dragons went on an 8-2 run to lead 20-10.
Coyle recorded four of her kills during that stretch. The guests
answered with six straight points, three on Woodcome aces, and got
back within 20-16, but Cortland scored the final five points to end
the match.
Jessica Hoeffner led Ithaca with 10 kills. Woodcome finished with
19 assists, four aces and 10 digs, and Taylor Horton had a
team-high 20 digs along with three aces.
