Pine Manor Edges Eastern Nazarene in Non-Conference Thriller

The Eastern Nazarene College women’s volleyball team created opportunities to pull away but the visiting Gators of Pine Manor Colleges refused to give in and battled back for the 3-2 victory Thursday night at ENC’s Lahue PE Center.. The Gators completed the comeback in the five sets as they fought back from a 2-1 deficit to take the non-conference match on hosting Eastern Nazarene’s senior night.

Eastern Nazarene rode the momentum of the pregame senior day ceremony as they took the first set 25-22. Pine Manor quickly responded with a convincing 25-13 victory, tying the match at one apiece.

In the third set, Eastern Nazarene jumped out to an early 17-5 lead and looked to be headed for an easy win. Trailing by 8, the Gators climbed all the way back to 22-18. With their lead cut to four, the Lady Lions regained their composure and finished of the third set 25-18.

The fourth set was a back and forth thriller in which the lead changed hands seemingly every other point. With the score tied at 23, Pine Manor came up with two big plays to finish off the set with a 25-23 win.

The deciding set was played even more closely than the second as neither team lead by more than two points throughout. But it was the visiting Gators that persevered and cam e out with a 15-12 win and the 3-2 match victory.

Freshman setter Megan Patch orchestrated the Gator offense as she tallied a match high 44 assists. Pine Manor sophomore Alie Johnston lead all players with 15 kills while teammate Ashley Carusone anchored the Gator defense with 29 digs.

Eastern Nazarene senior Amber Burns led the offensive attack with 13 kills and 9 assists in her final home match of a brilliant four year career. Freshman setter Sam Losano led the team with 11 assists while fellow freshman Cayla Clinkscale contributed with 8 assists and 5 digs.

The Lions will play their final two matches of the 2010 regular season as they travel to Western New England College for TCCC matches against WNEC and New England College. Match times are set for 11am and 1 pm.
