Story Courtesy of Emory Athletics Site
The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team came through
with a pair of victories on Saturday en route to winning the Emory
Classic Championship. The Eagles opened the day with a 3-0
win (25-23, 26-24, 25-15) decision over Texas Lutheran before
closing out the weekend with a 3-0 verdict (25-7, 25-14, 25-23)
over St. Catherine. Emory now stands 10-0 on the year, the
first such ten-game start for the program since 2000.
Emory hit a solid 30.7 percent (48-13—114) in the TLU match
compared to the Bulldogs’ effort of 16.7 percent
(37—17—120). Sophomore Breanah Bourque continued
her inspired play, pacing the Eagles with 12 kills along with a
52.4 hitting percentage (12-1—21). Bourque also helped
the team to an 8-3 edge in total blocks by registering five block
assists. Junior Jessica McAlvany was second on the squad with
nine terminations, and junior Natalie Schonefeld aided the cause by
dishing out 41 assists while picking up 11 digs.
The Emory offense was in high gear against the Wildcats of St.
Catherine, hitting season-high 39.8 percent (43-8—88).
McAlvany topped all players with 14 kills and hit 43.3 percent
(14-1—30). Senior Amelia McCall was second high on the squad
with nine successful put-aways en route to a season-high 53.3
attack percentage (9-1—15). Junior Ali Wright made the
most of her attack opportunities, hitting 53.8 percent with seven
kills and no errors in 13 attempts, and also played a key defensive
role at the net with one block solo and six block
assists.
In a vote done by the Classic coaches, Amelia McCall was tabbed as
the MVP while Bourque and Schonefeld were all-tournament
selections.
