Trinity Volleyball Finishes Third at Fall Classic

San Antonio – The 22nd-ranked Trinity Tigers volleyball team split its matches Saturday at the Trinity University Fall Classic in Sams Gym.
Trinity beat East Texas Baptist 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-10 in the opener, and then fell 25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 25-19 to Puget Sound in the final match of the tournament.
The Tigers (6-4, 2-2 at the tournament) finished in third place behind Christopher Newport and Puget Sound, and ahead of Southwestern, East Texas Baptist and Pacific.
Trinity won the second set with Puget Sound by hitting .344, and limiting the Loggers to .061.
Junior middle blocker Desie Baker led the Tigers in kills in the match, with 11, while blocking three shots. Senior setter Caiti Troyer had 35 assists, to go with 15 digs. Troyer has registered 339 assists this season, and 2,663 in her career. She is fifth on Trinity’s all-time assists list.
Senior defensive specialist Emily Hilliard led the team with 19 digs, and sophomore libero Meredith Erwin added 13. Senior defensive specialist Adriene Busch mad 11 digs.
First-year setter Maryn Swierc picked up three blocks and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Maddy Hazelwood fired up three service aces, and had two blocks.
The Tigers came back from an 0-1 deficit to beat East Texas Baptist. In the decisive fourth set, Trinity opened play with an 11-1 lead, and hit .385.
Hazelwood led the team with 13 kills and six blocks in the match. First-year outside hitter Sara Robertson added 12 kills, and sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Forbes had 11. Troyer produced 42 assists and 13 digs. Erwin was the Tigers digs leader, with 16, Hilliard made 14, and Busch had 12.
Trinity begins conference play by competing next Friday and Saturday at the SCAC West-Central Tournament at Georgetown, Texas. The Tigers return home Oct. 6 to host Texas Lutheran in a non-conference match.
