Winterling and Barnes Help Frostburg State to 3-0 Shutout of McDaniel

FROSTBURG, Md. - Junior Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had 10 kills and classmate Christine Barnes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) handed out a career-high 20 assists to power the Frostburg State volleyball team to its eighth shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over McDaniel, Wednesday.

The Bobcats improved to 11-0 overall on the season and moved to within one game of the best start by a volleyball team in school history. The previous mark is set at 12-0 by the 1999 team that also holds the school record for wins in a season (36).

FSU opened game one with a 25-13 win. The Bobcats raced out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. Frostburg held a 20-8 late lead and closed out the game with a 4-0 run.

Game two resembled the first as FSU jumped out to an 11-3 lead. McDaniel (0-9) battled back to bring the score to 15-10, but Frostburg posted a 6-0 run for a 22-13 lead. The two teams exchanged the final few points before FSU captured a 25-16 win.

McDaniel used an early 4-0 run in the third game for a 7-3 lead. However, FSU rebounded to tie the contest at 10-10 and then collected an 11-3 run for a 21-13 lead before cruising to the win.

Senior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) posted her seventh double-double of the season and fourth straight with 16 kills and 10 digs. Senior Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) finished with 13 digs, seven kills and one ace while junior Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) turned in 14 digs, eight kills and four aces.

Junior setter Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) started the match and recorded 13 assists and senior libero Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had five digs.

The Bobcats return to the court on Friday when they play Philadelphia Biblical at the Bridgewater Invitational at 8:00 pm.
