Millsaps wins 3-1 at Loyola

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University
New Orleans volleyball team hosted Millsaps College on Wednesday
night at The Den and were defeated 3-1 (21-25, 20-25, 25-18,
23-25).
After dropping the first two sets, Loyola (11-9) battled back to
win the third game easily. In the final set, the Wolfpack led by as
much as five points late in the contest but could not hang on as
Millsaps went on to beat Loyola for the second time this
season.
Gina Gill led Loyola on the night, finishing with 18 kills, five
aces, and 19 digs. Sabrina Stansberry had eight kills and Kailey
Tuthill added seven. Samantha Worsham assisted on 35 of 43 Wolfpack
kills while adding 17 digs. Also on defense, Amanda Oldani had 16
digs, Alex Blitzer added 12, and Ashley England assisted on four
blocks.
Loyola held an 8-5 in set one, but Millsaps fought back to take
the lead at 13-12 on a tip attack. Their lead extended to 23-19 on
a kill, and then a block gave the Majors a 25-21 win.
Millsaps (9-6) broke an 11-11 tie in set two with four of the next
five points. An ace by Gill brought the Wolfpack within two at
19-17, but the Majors answered with the next two points. A bad set
by Loyola ended game two as Millsaps went up 2-0 with a 25-20
victory.
For the third game, Stansberry tied the score at 11 with a kill,
then the ‘Pack grabbed the lead at 16-15 on an ace by Gill.
LU went up 20-17 on an ace by Oldani, and then back-to-back kills
from Tuthill put the ‘Pack up 23-18. Worsham would end the
set at 25-18 with Loyola’s fifth ace of the game.
The Maroon and Gold came out strong in the final set as
consecutive aces by Gill put the score at 6-2. Millsaps evened the
score at 12 before Loyola batted down the next two Major attacks to
go up 14-12. With the ‘Pack up 23-21, Millsaps responded with
the final four points as a block ended the match at 25-23.
