SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The State
University of New York at New Paltz women’s volleyball team
(24-10) won in straight sets against Union (N.Y.) College and
Ithaca College on day one of the Skidmore Invitational Friday
evening. The Hawks downed the Dutchwomen, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22,
25-16), before besting the Bombers, 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-11).
Against the Dutchwomen, senior middle hitter Dana
Kindelmann (Nesconset, N.Y.) hit at a .500 clip, landing
eight kills on 16 swings. Kindelmann also contributed heavily to
the team’s blocking effort, recording six total on the match.
Junior outside hitter Melinda
DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y.) had six kills and 10
digs, while freshman setter Brigid
Moore (Victor, N.Y.) dished out 10 assists and tallied
six digs.
For Union, Mackenzie Westfall and Kim Armstrong each had 12
assists, while Eve Richards had 10 kills and Erika VanValkenburg
had 17 digs.
The Hawks won the rubber match of a three-game season series
against the Bombers in the nightcap, taking the contest by the most
lopsided margin of the three meetings between the two programs. New
Paltz won, 3-1, when the two teams met initially on Sept. 18 at the
Hawks Invitational, but Ithaca retaliated with a 3-2 triumph in a
five-set thriller at the Wellesley Invitational on Oct. 15.
Kindelmann once again shined offensively, racking up eight kills
in 12 total attempts on the tilt. She tied with sophomore right
side Eleanor
Skovgaard (Pittsford, N.Y.) for the team-high in blocks
with four. Skovgaard enjoyed a standout performance on the attack
as well, flooring seven kills in 12 total attempts. Sophomore
middle hitter Dana
Vosilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) collected six kills on 13
total attempts, while freshman setter Marissa
King (Canandaigua, N.Y.) handed out 20 assists. Sophomore
right side Michelle
Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had a well-rounded
effort, totaling five kills, five assists and 14 digs.
New Paltz finishes out Skidmore Invitational play tomorrow
afternoon, as the Hawks take on SUNY Plattsburgh at noon in a
non-conference match before squaring off with host Skidmore College
at 2 p.m.
