New Paltz Advances to SUNYAC Championship with 3-1 Win over Fredonia
FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of
New York at New Paltz women’s volleyball team (28-10)
eliminated the Fredonia Blue Devils (24-13), 3-1 (19-25, 25-22,
25-14, 25-19), in the semifinal round of the 2010 State University
of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Volleyball Championship
Tournament Friday afternoon. The match was held in Dods Hall, on
the campus of SUNY Fredonia.
This marks New Paltz’s eighth straight win as they prevailed
over Fredonia.
Fredonia maintained the tempo early during the first set, holding
a nine point lead. The blue and orange pulled within four later in
the set, but the Blue Devils took set one.
In the second set, both teams exchanged the lead until the Hawks
pulled away with the second stanza, after Fredonia tied the match
at 13.
The Hawks built up momentum down the stretch in set three. New
Paltz scored 13 of the match’s final 15 points to secure a
2-1 advantage.
The blue and orange defeated the Fredonia in the fourth frame. The
Hawks were down, 7-1, but battled back, ultimately advancing to the
SUNYAC Championship match.
Junior outside hitter Melinda
DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y.) collected a
double-double, with 11 kills in 29 total attempts with three errors
for a .276 hitting percentage and added 13 digs. Senior middle
hitter Dana
Kindelmann (Nesconset, N.Y.) compiled a team-high 12
kills in 27 total attempts with one error and collected two block
assists and one solo block. Freshman setter Marissa
King (Canandaigua, N.Y.) assembled 22 assists.
For the Blue Devils, Brittany Lis handed out a match-high 40
assists, while Sarah Zureck collected a match-high 27 digs.
Fredonia, which entered the tournament as the West
Division’s No. 1 seed, finished its season with a record of
24-13.
The Hawks advance to the championship match tomorrow at 2 p.m., as
they take on the winner of the other semifinal match between
Cortland and Geneseo.
