ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. -- Northwestern College improved its
current winning streak to four on Tuesday night with a pair of 3-0
victories over Crown College and the University of
Wisconsin-Superior. Senior Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet,
Minn./Carlton) earned her 1,000th kill as the Eagles’ record
climbed to 23-11 overall and 10-2 in UMAC play.
In their first match of the day against Crown, NWC maintained an
even-keeled .376 attacking percentage which was peaked by a 14-kill
third set as the Eagles won 25-16, 25-14, 25-11. Krista Stoltz
(Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Leah Kostek (Des Moines,
Iowa/Des Moines Christian) combined for 35 assists while Sandstrom
had no problem earning the five kills she needed to hit 1,000 for
her career, shattering that mark with 11 kills in the
match. Danielle Rhodes (Iowa City, Iowa/City) had nine kills
for Northwestern, while Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Victory Christian) each added eight as
the Eagles posted 41 kills in the game.
Defensively, Stoltz and Sandstrom shared three of the team’s
four blocks in the three sets while Kelsey Korporal, who was named
the UMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, had a match-high
10 digs.
NWC didn’t lower its intensity against UW-Superior as the
Eagles left town with a 25-14, 25-10, 25-16 victory. The
Purple and Gold held their opponent to under a .100 hitting rate
for the second straight match while owning a 44-24 advantage in
kills against the Yellow Jackets.
Sandstrom shared the stage with Greta King (Willmar,
Minn./Willmar) this time as each posted 11 kills in the second
match of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Koth chipped in with
nine kills as Kostek and Stoltz were nearly perfect again with 18
and 11 assists, respectively. Karrah Miller (Aurora,
Neb./Nebraska Christian) was the team’s digs leader this
time, tallying 10.
Northwestern will now look ahead to its final weekend of the UMAC
regular season with Northland College and the College of St.
Scholastica coming to the Ericksen Center. On Friday, the
Eagles will welcome the LumberJills from Northland for a 7 p.m.
match before NWC plays a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with St.
Scholastica (1 p.m.) and Augsburg College (3 p.m.).
