NYU Sweeps Three at Labor Day Invite

The New York University women's volleyball team won its first two matches of the 2010 season in decisive fashion, sweeping the Polytechnic Institute of NYU and SUNY Geneseo on Friday, September 3, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

In the Violets' first match of the weekend's Labor Day Invitational, NYU easily defeated the Blue Jays of NYU-Poly in straight sets (25-13, 25-11, 25-18).

Debuting for the Violets, outside hitter Jessica Prepolec led the way on offense, putting down a team-high 13 kills while hitting .357. On defense, the freshman put up seven digs and added four blocks, including a solo.

Also strong on offense for NYU was sophomore Kendyl Dunn who notched eight kills while hitting .500.

At the net, sophomore Sally Downs put up strong numbers. She put back a match-high five blocks while also adding five kills.

On defense, sophomore libero Alexis Schwartz notched a match-high 18 kills while also adding a team-best three service aces.

For the Blue Jays, Meredith Shipman and Victoria Kalvert both put down six kills while Marisa Mauerhan and Shipman both tallied 10 digs.

In the Violets' second match of the tournament, the team continued its domination by knocking off the Knights of SUNY Geneseo 3-0 (25-17, 25-6, 25-15).

Leading the way in the match was Dunn, who notched a team-high 10 kills while hitting .500.

Junior middle blocker Kolby Warren also put together a strong offensive performance, putting down nine kills and hitting .692.

In the second set, senior Rachel Sawyer provided a boost on the back line by serving the first 13 points of the set to give the Violets a 13-0 lead. Overall, Sawyer tallied seven aces, tying her career high, while also adding nine digs.

Schwartz continued to provide a boost on defense by putting up a match-high 12 digs.

For the Knights, Krista Frieling put down six kills. Laura Galvin and Noelle Morrison each added nine digs.

NYU Finished the night with a 3-0 (26-24, 25--12, 25-20) sweep of Coast Guard.
