Springfield Battles Past MIT, 3-0, In NEWMAC Semifinals

Springfield, Mass. - November 6, 2010 - The top-seeded Springfield College women's volleyball grinded out a 3-0 win over fourth-seeded MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Semifinal on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena. Four different players recorded at least seven kills for the Pride as it advanced to the championship match by virtue of a 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 victory.

Springfield will now await the winner of the second semifinal between Coast Guard and Wellesley which will start at 3:30 pm.

The Pride improve to 29-3 while MIT falls to 21-14.

Kim Giaquinto posted a team-best 10 kills with Sarah Lang-Rodean tallying eight kills and four blocks out of the middle. Tessa Smolinski chipped in with eight kills and 10 digs while fellow outside hitter Heather Lively notched seven kills. Meaghan Hart recorded a team-best 11 digs for the Pride and Kelsea Hellyar delivered 33 assists to go along with six digs and two aces.

Kelly Schulte registered a team-best eight kills and Trinity Leonard added seven kills and eight digs for the Engineers. Sharon Hao passed out 27 assists, as the MIT defense was paced by Katie Spielbauer's match-high 12 digs.
