ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Thiel College women’s
volleyball team wrapped up a very successful trip to New York
as it defeated Fredonia State to go 4-0 at the Purple and Gold
Invitational.
Thiel had a bit of trouble with Fredonia State as they took the
first two sets from the Tomcats by scores of 29-27 and 25-21. Thiel
was able to battle back by winning three straight sets by scores of
25-19, 25-22, and 15-9.
“The whole team fought hard all weekend,” said head
coach Steve Brewer. “Coming back from two sets down is very
difficult, but the ladies performed remarkably well and I’m
very proud of all of them.”
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly
Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) led the Thiel offense with
16 kills and junior outside hitter Megan
Kay (Girard, Ohio, Liberty)added 12.
Freshman libero Jenna
Samsa (Rittman, Ohio, Wadsworth) led a total team effort
on the defensive side of the ball as she had 39 digs in the
match.
Along with the championship, a pair of Tomcats also earned special
honors as Kay was named to the all-tournament team and Barzak was
named as the tournament MVP.
Thiel will be in action once again as they return to PAC play on
October 9 in a tri-match with Waynesburg and Saint Vincent. The
first match in Latrobe is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
