Make it a Dozen; USCGA Bears Hold Off Trinity

HARTFORD, CONN.--(10/21/10)--Coast Guard, ranked fifth in the New England regional poll, extended its winning streak to 12 by holding off Trinity, ranked tenth in the region, 3-2 in a non-conference match between the two Connecticut teams.

The Bears won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-14 before Trinity kept its upset hopes alive by rallying to even the match with a 25-15 win in set three and a 25-22 win in the fourth set for force a fifth and a deciding set. Coast Guard won the fifth set 15-10 to improve to 23-4 on the season.

Sophomore Lauren Bloch had a game-high 18 kills while classmate Keriann Mason added 33 digs and a pair of aces to lead Coast Guard.

Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the match, using a 9-3 run to close out the first set, 25-19, and controlling the next frame from beginning to end with a 25-14 triumph.

Trinity turned the tables in the third set, jumping out to an 11-4 lead and holding off the Bears’ comeback by scoring 10 of the set’s final 12 points for a 25-15 win.

The fourth set was a hard-fought with Trinity taking four of the last five points for a 25-22 victory, but the Bears went ahead, 10-2, to open the fifth set en route to a 15-10 clinching win.

Sophomore OH Danielle Isaman paced a well-balanced Trinity offense with 17 kills and added five digs and two solo blocks, while senior tri-captain RS Kristen Anderson had 15 kills, nine digs, and a game-high three aces, and freshman Hannah Brickley contributed 13 kills.

Junior S Jen Low notched a game-high 51 assists and 12 digs, while junior tri-captain Sarah Blagden and junior Alexandra Pell had 26 and 15 digs, respectively, and were a perfect 52-for-52 between them receiving for the Bantams.

Freshman Kelsey DePorto had five blocks in the middle for the Bears, and Coast Guard sophomore Karen Matic had 34 sets.

Trinity drops to 11-7 overall.
