KINGS POINT, N.Y. –
Two sets where the United States Merchant Marine Academy
women’s volleyball team dominated, bookended a thrilling and
nail-biting middle set, as the Mariners defeated St. Joseph’s
College of Long Island, 3-0, at Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point,
N.Y. on Wednesday evening. With the victory, USMMA’s overall
record stands at 6-4. Following the loss, St. Joe’s fell to
1-6 on the year.
The opening set, which Kings Point won 25-11, saw the Mariners
dominate. The second set, however, was a total back-and-forth,
see-saw affair that ended with a 32-30 USMMA triumph. The final set
was much of the same as the first. The Mariners had control of the
set the entire way, culminating in a 25-14 win. Kings Point got off
to a 9-2 start in the final set after the first point, awarded to
St. Joe’s, was taken and given to USMMA as the Golden Eagles
were penalized for having the wrong server.
For the Mariners, freshman middle hitter Julie
Flaherty (West Islip, N.Y.) had a game-high 13 kills,
while senior setter Jenna Palaschak (Annandale,
Va.) dished out a match-best 26 assists. Senior libero
Ana
Fuschetto (Swink, Colo.) and senior outside hitter
Janelle Kibler-Silengo (Frisco, Colo.) recorded
seven digs each.
For the Golden Eagles, senior setter Allyson Franklin
(East Islip, N.Y.) had a team-high 14 assists, while
junior libero Jaclyn Shields (Mount Sinai, N.Y.)
posted a match-high 19 digs.
Each squad smacked four service aces.
Head Coach James
Seitelman and the Mariners return to action on Saturday when
they square off against three schools at the Baruch Invitational in
Manhattan. Starting at 11 a.m., Kings Point takes on Ramapo
College, which is followed by matches versus Richard Stockton at 1
p.m. and Baruch College at 3 p.m.
