#14 Whitewater Opens 2-0

Madison, WI. The Whitewater volleyball team, ranked
fourteenth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason
top 25 poll, defeated Lawrence University in four sets (25-10,
22-25, 25-20, 25-13) in their second match of the night in the
Edgewood Triangular.
The Warhawks pounded the ball in the first set recording 11 kills
with no errors while forcing eight attack errors by the Vikings on
the opposite side of the net. UW-W strolled to a 25-10 win.
Lawrence bounced back in the second set to hand the Warhawks their
first set loss of the year 25-22.
The Vikings used the momentum from set two to keep the third set
close but Whitewater prevailed going up in sets 2-1 with a 25-20
third set victory.
The fourth set played out quite similar to the first set of the
match with UW-W posting 10 kills and just three attack errors while
the Vikings recorded just seven kills with eight attack errors.
Senior Caitlin
Hogan led all hitters at the net with 11 kills and
assisted on three blocks. Junior Sofia
Sanchez pounded down 10 kills of her own and added 13
digs, a solo block and two assist blocks. Junior setter Christina
DeGroot dished out 39 assists and contributed 11 digs.
Defensively, junior Alyssa
Bauer topped the Warhawks with 16 digs to record her
eleventh consecutive match with double-digit digs.
Three Vikings put down nine kills apiece. Kathleen Rowland led all
players defensively with 18 digs.
UW-W posted 47 kills in the match and held Lawrence to a .041
hitting percentage forcing 30 attack errors in four sets.
The Warhawks defeated Edgewood College earlier Wednesday to sweep
the competition at the Edgewood Triangular and begin the 2010
season 2-0.
Whitewater will travel to Springfield, OH to play in the
Wittenberg Tournament Friday and Saturday, September 3-4.
UW-W will return home to host their own triangular September 8
against Wisconsin Lutheran and Elmhurst College at 3:00 and 7:00 pm
respectively.
