Whitewater led most of the way through the first set until Chicago
took the lead 24-23. UW-W came out of a Maroon timeout with
back-to-back kills from Caitlin
Hogan and Shaela
Hayden to retake the lead 25-24. Chicago went on to score
the next three points to steal the set 27-25.
The second set showcased a similar pattern but the Warhawks
refused to let Chicago back in the set. A 6-1 UW-W run gave
Whitewater all the lead it would need as they rolled to a 25-15
win.
Set three looked almost like a replay of the first set with the
roles reversed. This time Chicago led most of the way with the
Warhawks overcoming the difference and battling back to take the
set 27-25.
Whitewater jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set four forcing a Chicago
timeout. The Warhawks called a timeout of their own when the
momentum shifted and the Maroons took the lead 15-13. The teams
traded points until a 5-0 run by Chicago broke the set open, gave
the Maroons a 21-17 and put the set out of reach for UW-W. Chicago
went on to take set four 25-20.
In the deciding fifth set, Whitewater trailed 1-6 before making a
comeback to take the lead at the side switch 8-7. UW-W had the lead
13-10 when Chicago posted a 6-1 run to take the set 15-13 and the
match 3-2.
Four Warhawk netters recorded double figure kills. UW-W was led by
Katy
Krajnak with 19, Hogan pounded down 18, Sofia
Sanchez added 12 and Hayden had 10. Alyssa
Bauer led Whitewater defensively with 27 digs, the
most by a Warhawk this season. Backcourt teammate Kelli
Trautmann also posted double digit digs with
10.
UW-W is set to host UW-Stout Friday, October 1 at 7:00 pm in
Kris Russell Volleyball Arena. The match is designated as the "Dig
Pink" breast cancer awareness night.
