NEWMAC Announces Women’s Volleyball Postseason Awards

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2011 women’s volleyball all-conference team and postseason award recipients on Monday and tournament champion, Springfield, took home a pair of individual accolades, including NEWMAC Athlete of the Year Lauren Torvi (North Smithfield, R.I.). Moira Long was also selected as the NEWMAC Coach of the Year. Sydney Carfagno (Los Angeles, Calif.) of Wellesley was the league’s Rookie of the Year while Smith College received the NEWMAC Sportsmanship award.

Tessa Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) joined her teammate Torvi on the first team All-Conference. Tournament runner-up, Wellesley College, and MIT each had a pair of first team honorees. In addition to Carfagno from Wellesley, Isabel Custodio (Powell, Ohio) was named while Kelly Schulte (Riverside, Calif.) and Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, Mich.) represented MIT. Kelsey DePorto (Frankfort, Ill.) of Coast Guard was the final first team pick.
