Amherst Sweeps Johnson & Wales, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Mary Reiser (New York, N.Y.)
recorded a team-high seven kills to lead the Amherst women’s
volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-15) sweep of visiting
Johnson & Wales University at LeFrak Gymnasium. Winners of five
of their last six matches, the Lord Jeffs improved to 6-2 overall
on the season heading into this weekend’s Amherst
Classic.
Hoping to get off to a fast start, the Wildcats jumped out to an
early 3-0 lead in what began as a closely contested first set,
before Amherst settled in, regaining control and closing out strong
en route to a 25-18 victory. Despite finding themselves in another
3-0 hole to start the second, the Lord Jeffs rallied, securing an
identical 25-18 triumph before closing out the match and completing
the sweep with a 25-15 third set win.
Senior outside hitter Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, Calif.) had six
kills, while Meghan McCafferty ’14 (Tyngsboro, Mass.), who
hit .455, Lauren Antion ’15 (Los Angeles, Calif.) and KC
Kanoff ’12 (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) each finished with
five spikes.
Devin Pence ’14 (Los Angeles, Calif.) registered five
service aces in the win, with Callie Neilson ’13 (Escondido,
Calif.) adding 29 assists. Junior Kristin Keeno (Honolulu, Hawaii)
once again anchored Amherst’s defensive efforts with a
match-best 26 digs.
Seniors Karlie Haack and Erin Leahy paced the Johnson & Wales
attack, combining for 11 kills, while junior Ashley Rey had 12
assists, nine digs and four service aces. Sophomore Natasha
Finkbeiner chipped in with nine helpers, while Courtney Wright
’13 and Alyssa Drapeau ’15 collected 23 and nine digs,
respectively.
The Lord Jeffs will host the annual Amherst Classic Sept. 23-24, opening play this Friday against Brandeis.
