No. 6 Captains Win Battle Against No. 11 Juniata 3-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University
volleyball team engaged in a battle tonight against Juniata College
and came out on top 3-1. This is the first win for the Captains
against the Eagles in program history. Over 1,200 fans were
cheering on the Captains tonight on the first night of the CNU
Invitational.
The first set was the longest of the night with the Captains
finally taking it 32-30. CNU got out to an 11-6 lead in the first
set but the Eagles came back to tie it up at 14-14. The two teams
went back and forth and after eight match points the Captains took
the victory after a kill by senior Chelsea
McClure tied it up at 30-30. The next two points came to
the Captains from attacking errors by the Eagles.
The Eagles came out strong in the second set taking a 10-3 lead
over the Captains. But CNU fought back and ended up taking the lead
for the first time in the set at 19-18. After exchanging points the
score was tied at 23-23 when two consecutive kills by Juniata tied
the match with a 25-23 Eagles win.
The third set stayed close the entire time with neither team
leading by more than three points in the set. The score was even 14
different times in the set with last being at 23-23. A kill by
junior Cory Harris
gave the Captains the 24-23 lead and a kill by junior Christie
Fellows earned the Captains their second set of the
night.
The Captains were up 8-3 in the fourth set before Juniata called a
timeout to stop the momentum. The Eagles scored three straight
points to pull within two but the Captains maintained the lead.
With the score 17-13 in favor of the Captains, Juniata scored five
straight points to take the lead for the first time in the set at
18-17. After going back and forth and tying the game three times
the Eagles and Captains were tied at 22-22 after a kill by Fellows.
An attacking error by Juniata gave the Captains the lead and
resulted in a Juniata timeout.
Fellows struck again for the Captains with a service ace that gave
the Captains their first match point at 24-22. A service error
followed bringing the Eagles back to within one. But an attacking
error by the Eagles gave the set and match victory to the Captains
as they won 25-23.
Junior Bailey
Jensen had a great night with a match-high nine blocks.
She added 10 blocks and a dig. McClure led the Captains in kills
with 11 while junior Alyssa Kidd
led with 23 assists. Fellows had two service aces and junior
Abby Hogge
led with 25 digs.
Juniata was led by Courtney Lydick with a match-high 21 kills and
four blocks, Courtney Greenberg with 50 assists and Libby Morrison
with 26 digs.
The Captains will play tomorrow at 12:00pm versus Mary Washington
and at 4:00pm against Salisbury. Salisbury won the first match of
the night tonight against Mary Washington 3-1. Also playing
tomorrow are Juniata and Mary Washington at 10:00am and Salisbury
versus Juniata at 2:00pm.
