NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University
volleyball team won their third straight USA South match as they
defeated N.C. Wesleyan 3-0 tonight in the Freeman Center. The
Captains improved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action. The
Bishops dropped to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in conference.
The Captains controlled the action in the first set limiting the
Bishops to only nine points. Freshman Jessie
Kolden had six kills in the set while senior Chelsea
McClure and junior Bailey
Jensen had four each.
The Captains started the second set with two service aces from
freshman Carter
Petsos and got up to a 10-5 lead over the Bishops. But
N.C. Wesleyan pulled to within three with the score 12-9 and stayed
within three to four points of the lead until the Captains began to
pull away eventually taking a 19-13 lead. CNU continued to put
points on the board, winning the set 25-19.
The Captains got off to a slow start in the third set, allowing
the Bishops to take a 7-3 lead before scoring seven straight points
to take a 10-7 lead. The Captains maintained the lead, extending it
to nine at 19-10. The Bishops tried pulled to within four points of
the Captains but CNU was able to hang on for a 25-20 third set
win.
Kolden led with 14 kills in the match with McClure and Jensen
picking up 11 apiece. Jessie
Heavenrich had 41 of the Captains' 49 assists. Kolden and
Petsos both had great serves in the match, each picking up three
aces.
Abby
Hogge had 25 digs in the match while Heavenrich tied her
career high with 19 digs. McClure got up defensively for three
blocks to lead the Captains.
The Captains return to the court in Fayetteville, Va. with two USA
South matches this Friday. The Captains are set to start at 12:00pm
versus Methodist and at 2:00pm versus Greensboro.
