Coe clinches share of first IIAC Title

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College volleyball team bounced back after a first set loss Wednesday night to clinch a share of its first Iowa Conference title in school history, as they beat Loras 3-2. The win gives Coe the number one seed in the IIAC Tournament.

The Kohawks dropped the first set 25-22, but bounced back in the second set.  Coe went back and forth late in the set with the Duhawks, but came away with a 26-24 win to tie the match at 1-1.  The Kohawks came out firing in the third set, dominating the Duhawks for a 25-14 win.  Looking to put the match away, Coe couldn't keep up with Loras in the fourth set, as the Duhawks won 25-17, forcing a fifth and final set.

In the fifth set, Coe jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the turn and held on for the 15-11 victory.  The win improved the Kohawks to 27-2 overall and 7-0 in the Iowa Conference.  The 27 wins are the most for the Kohawks under Head Coach DeAnn Woodin.

Freshman Rachel Schaefer (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) led the Kohawks with 17 kills.  Seniors Molly Steffens (Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque) and Kaitlin McClimon (DeWitt, Iowa/Central) joined her in double figures with 13 kills apiece.  Freshman Rachel Bosworth (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and sophomore Megan Barron (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) added nine kills apiece.  Junior Emily Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) added 53 assists.

The Kohawks travel to Mount Vernon this weekend for the Cornell Triangular, where they face Iowa Wesleyan at 10 a.m. and Cornell at 4 p.m.  Coe will return to Iowa Conference play next week, as they travel to Buena Vista Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. match with the Beavers.
