Kohawks knock off #24 Wartburg 3-2
WAVERLY, Iowa - For just the third time in school history, the Kohawk volleyball team left Wartburg College with a win over the Knights. After dropping the first set, the Kohawks battled back for a 3-2 win over the 24th-ranked Knights. All three Coe wins in the series were 3-2.
The Knights jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first set and
never trailed as they came away with the 25-21 win. Coe hit
just .029 in the set, while the Knights hit .258. Things
changed for the Kohawks in the second set, as they jumped out to a
5-1 lead and never trailed in a 25-18 victory. Coe hit .156
in the set, while the Knights were in the negative.
Just like the second set, Coe took an early lead and never
trailed. Wartburg did tie the match at 14, but never took the
lead. Coe hit .278 in the set, while the Knights hit .071.
Wartburg came back firing in the fourth set, hitting a
match-high .351. The Kohawks hit .250, but could never
rebound after getting down early in the set.
Wartburg took a 3-1 lead in the fifth set, but Coe scored six
of the next seven points to take a 7-4 lead. Wartburg scored
to make Coe's lead 7-5, but wouldn't get any closer the rest of the
day, as Coe won the set 15-7.
Senior Kaitlin
McClimon (DeWitt, Iowa/Central) had a career-high 26 kills,
while hitting .440 in the match. She also had two solo blocks
and an assisted block. Sophomore Megan
Barron (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) joined McClimon in double
figures with 10 kills while hitting .250.
Freshman Rachel
Bosworth (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had nine kills, while freshman
Rachel
Schaefer (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) had eight kills and two
service aces. Junior Emily Ryan
(Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) had 48 assists and 14 digs.
Junior Brittany
Shickell (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had a match-high 19 digs.
Freshman Alissa
Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) and senior Molly
Steffens (Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque) added 13 digs
apiece.
The win improved the Kohawks to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the
Iowa Conference. They join Central as the only remaining
undefeated teams in league play. Coe's 3-0 start ties the
school record, joining the 2006 NCAA Tournament team in the record
books.
The Kohawks return to action on Friday, as they travel to
Ripon, Wis. for the Ripon Tournament. Coe will face St.
Mary's Friday at 6 p.m. and Ripon at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the
Kohawks will face Lakeland at Noon and Marian at 2 p.m.
