Cortland Knocks Off #17 NYU During Opening Day of Nazareth Invitational
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team
opened with two victories, including a four-set win over nationally
17th-ranked NYU, during the first day of competition at the
Nazareth College Invitational. The Red Dragons (6-0) will face
Mount Union of Ohio at 12 p.m. and Fredonia at 4 p.m. Saturday in
the predetermined tournament schedule.
Cortland knocked off NYU by set scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-18 and
25-22. Senior Ashley
Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) led the Red Dragons with
15 kills. She also finished with 13 digs and two aces. Senior
Sheena
Asibey (Brentwood) added 11 kills and three blocks and
sophomore Aubrey
Barrett (Liverpool) finished with 10 kills, six digs, six
assists and two aces.
Junior Kristen
Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) dished out 41 assists
and put down four kills. Senior Jaclyn
Lawrence (Marilla/Iroquois Central) recorded 10 digs.
The Red Dragons then recovered from a slow start to beat RIT in
four sets, 23-25, 27-25, 25-18, 25-14. Coyle paced the squad with
17 kills and added nine digs and two aces. Barrett reached the
10-kill mark for the second straight match and also totaled four
blocks, six digs and five assists.
Guercio repeated her 41-assist effort. She also had seven digs,
three kills and two blocks. Senior Kaitlyn
Cooper (Webster/Webster Schroeder) finished with seven
kills and four blocks and junior Katie
Wick (Cortland/Homer) added six kills, two aces and a
team-high 18 digs.
