Covenant Volleyball Lights Out in Conference Play

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.-Covenant hosted both Spelman College and Wesleyan College on Saturday as part of a Great South Athletic Conference tri-match series.  Covenant won all three sets against the Lady Jaguars of Spelman (25-9, 25-12, 25-11), starting out the day with a powerful offense.  The second match against Wesleyan College went even better as the Lady Scots continued to fire on all cylinders and swept the Pioneers 25-9, 25-11, 25-5.

In the opening match of the day, Covenant took to the court for its third conference match of the season.  After a quick first game, the Lady Scots found themselves down 8-6 early in the second.  The Lady Scots were fierce in determination, however, and scored six unanswered points, followed by another run of nine, until the score reached 21-9.  Covenant would win the third game by a similar score.

Erica Adams had another fantastic match, earning 12 kills, contributing to the team total of 41.  Adams teamed up with setter Kristin Dahlstrand for several key blocks, as Covenant tallied five total as a team.  In the end, Covenant’s teamwork and hard hits earned the win for their first of the day.

Between matches for the Scots, Spelman and Wesleyan would face off with the Jaguars coming out victorious 3-0 (25-11 ,25-12, 25-10). Spelman started off the first set with seven straight points before Wesleyan got on the board. As hard as the Pioneers tried, it was all in sync for the Jaguars and they powered through for the win 25-11.

The second and third set were all in Spelman's favor with the Jaguars nailing their kills and serves throughout both sets. Carissa Steinmann and Victoria Apenteng led Spelman with nine kills a piece to lead them past the Pioneers and earn their fourth win of the season and first in the conference.

After a brief recess to allow Spelman and Wesleyan to face off, Covenant returned to the court for the final match of the day.  There, the Lady Scots defeated Wesleyan in roughly 40 minutes, allowing a total of 25 points the entire match.  The Pioneers offense struggled and their defense was kept on its toes trying to return countless slams by the Lady Scots.

Covenant started the third game with an astounding 10-0 run and eventually beat Wesleyan 25-5 for the final game win.  The ladies worked well together, both Kristin Dahlstrand (14 assists) and Lisa Solis (16 assists) sharing time as setter.  Paige Cheney helped spur on the team with 5 service aces.
