Stevens Splits at Elmira; Kowalska Eclipses 1,000 Kills
ELMIRA, N.Y. (September 25, 2011) – On
the second day of the Empire 8 Conference crossover tournament in
Elmira on Sunday, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s
volleyball team split its matches with Nazareth College and
Hartwick College. The Ducks lost to Nazareth, 3-0, and topped the
Hawks, 3-1. Stevens is now 10-9 this season and 3-1 in the
conference.
During the match against Hartwick, junior Maggie
Kowalska became just the fourth player in Stevens history
to record over 1,000 career kills. Kowalska tallied 19 kills on the
day and currently has 1,004 kills to her credit.
In the three-set loss to Nazareth, 25-14, 25-18, 27-25, Kowalska
led the Ducks with 10 kills and nine digs. Sophomore
Samamtha Gates handed out a team-high 24 assists,
while freshman Katie Hall added five kills and
five digs.
Sophomores Chrissy Dickinson and Mary
Caulson had solid performances at the net, combining for
nine kills and eight blocks. Dickinson registered five of each,
while Caulson tallied four kills and three blocks.
Fellow sophomore Hannah Gasper chipped in seven
digs in the set back.
In the victory over the Hawks, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 25-14, three
Ducks players registered nine kills. Kowalska, Dickinson and
Caulson each had nine. Kowalska also made six digs, Dickinson
blocked four kill attempts by Hartwick and Caulson paced the team
with 13 digs.
Gates once again led Stevens with 26 assists. She also posted nine
digs and four aces.
As a team, the Ducks recorded 15 aces against Hartwick.
