Elmhurst Sweeps 22nd-Ranked UW-Whitewater

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team,
ranked 25th in the latest AVCA poll, toppled the 22nd-ranked
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in three sets.
Elmhurst (15-4) upended UW-Whitewater (15-5) 25-21, 26-24, 25-20.
The win was only Elmhurst's fifth-ever victory against the Warhawks
and marked the first victory against UW-Whitewater for head coach
Julie
Hall.
The match was tight for all three sets as the score was even at
19-19 in each set. The Bluejays surged in front in the opening set
with three straight points to take the set 25-21.
Elmhurst trailed 22-19 and 24-22 in the second set, but four
straight points gave the Bluejays the set and a 2-0 lead. Sam
Szarmach smashed back-to-back kills to fight off both of
the Warhawks' set points. Marci
Novak followed with an ace to give Elmhurst a 25-24 lead
and an attack error on the Warhawks gave the Bluejays the set.
The third set also went down to the wire with the score once again
knotted at 19-19. A kill from Szarmach followed by a block from
Megan
Reynolds gave Elmhurst a 21-19 lead. Back-to-back kills
from Kaitlyn
Wilks and Reynolds put the Bluejays on top 23-19. An ace
from Perrie
Morgan gave Elmhurst five set-points. The Warhawks fought
off the first point, but Taylor
Rasmussen hammered down a kill to give the Bluejays the
victory.
Reynolds led the Bluejays' offense with 11 kills and six blocks.
Szarmach totaled nine kills and seven digs while Wilks finished
with eight kills. Hannah
Lessen tallied a team-leading 13 digs while Erin
Thill led the squad in assists with 29. Antonéya
Veasy Smith chipped in with seven kills and Katie
Rueffer finished with nine assists for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst travels to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville
tournament this weekend.
