Emerson Sweeps Away Brandeis To Spark Fresh Winning Streak
BOSTON, Mass. – Maddie Breeland's 11 kills and Kat Rice's three block assists helped make the difference Thursday night as the Emerson Women's Volleyball team collected lucky win number 13 on the season and pushed to three consecutive wins as they stormed to a 3-0 win over the Brandeis Judges. The Lions collected 25-14, 25-23 and 25-23 wins over BU to move to 13-4 on the year while the Judges drop to 7-11 overall.
In the first set the Lions were ready to rumble as they took off with an 8-0 lead to kick-start the match. The Judges seemed to be reeling through most of the rest of the set as 13 unforced errors showed that their rhythm was off as Maddie Breeland exploded for a .667 attack percentage while flooring four kills with Kat Rice swinging .500 right behind her with four kills of her own. The Judges never recovered from the assault as Emerson took a 25-14 win.
The Judges shook off the loss for round two though and came out at the bell to throw the book at the Lions in a gritty battle that saw 15 tie scores and four lead changes throughout the set. The difference maker in the set proved to rest on the arms of both teams though as Emerson stepped up to swing .200 as a team while the Judges only swung .098 with eight attack errors giving EC just enough room to snake through with a 25-23 win.
BU wasn't going quietly though as they brought the noise again in the third set and while they outhit the Lions .109 to .102 with 15 kills to EC's 11. The deciding factor proved to be a the Judges nine attack errors and Emerson's two blocks as the head-to-head saw another nail-biting match-up with nine tie scores and four lead changes before the Lions took one final swipe at the Judges to finish the match 25-23.
The Lions kick back into gear again this weekend as they travel to St. Joseph's (CT) for a GNAC tri-match against the Blue Jays and Suffolk Rams with matches at noon and 2 p.m.
