St. John Fisher Goes 3-0 at Empire 8 Crossover
The St. John Fisher College volleyball team capped off an
undefeated weekend at the Empire 8 Conference Crossover by going
2-0 in its second day of play today at Fisher. The Cardinals
are now 18-9 on the season and 5-2 in the Empire 8.
The Cardinals beat Alfred University in straight-sets and clinched
a bid to the Empire 8 Conference Championships, with the 3-0
(25-16, 25-12, 25-22) victory. In its second game of the day,
Fisher beat Nazareth College in five sets (25-23, 25-23, 6-25,
17-25, 15-13), to set its weekend record at 3-0.
Becca Smith led the Cardinals over Alfred, with 14 kills and 16
digs, both game highs. Amanda Pinak added a .500 attack
percentage and seven kills. Classmate Amy Street recorded 32
sets in the match.
With the win, Fisher will now travel to the Empire 8 Championship,
which will be held at Elmira College on November 5th,
with the final being played on Sunday, November
6th. Seedings will be announced at a later
date.
The Golden Flyers took the Cardinals to five sets after overcoming
a 2-0 deficit by winning the third and fourth sets. However,
in the final set, sophomore Mandi Mereness scored the final three
points to give the Cardinals a 15-13 victory. Mereness
recorded a kill for the 13th point, a solo block for the
14th and another kill for the final point of the
match.
Mereness finished the day with 10 kills and eight digs, while
Rachael Kline added 12 kills. Street contributed 39 assists
and 16 digs, with Libero Kelsey Osborne adding 20 digs.
