Minnesota-Morris Drops a Pair

Moorhead, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris volleyball team fell
twice today (Oct. 18), dropping a 3-0 match to host
Concordia-Moorhead before losing a five-setter to Mayville State,
3-2.
Concordia entered the match ranked No. 9 nationally and swept the
Cougars 25-14, 25-16 and 25-14, while Mayville State enacted some
revenge from the Cougars with their five-set comeback win by scores
of 25-9, 20-25, 16-25, 25-11 and 15-11.
It was a rough night for the Morris (13-10) offense as they hit
just .027 against Concordia (18-3) and .049 against Mayville State
(21-11).
Concordia is the first ranked team that the Cougars have faced
this season, while Mayville State is a team they had already beaten
on the P.E. Center, winning 3-0 on Sept. 9.
In the first matrch against the Cobbers, the Cougars had a
season-low 20 kills, with Steph Schmiesing's six leading the way
for the offense. They hit a high of just .043 it the first set,
with eight kills against six errors, while the Cobbers countered
with 17 kills and a .351 percentage on their way to the sweep.
The Cougars hit .026 in the second set, before a .000 mark in the
final set as Concordia completed the sweep.
Mayville State opened with a dominating first set, hitting .258 to
the Cougars -.220. After dropping the next two sets, the Comets
rebounded with just eight errors over the final two sets to come
back from a 2-1 deficit and take the match.

Clark led the way in the match with 15 kills, while
Schmiesing also hit double figures with 11.
Natalie
Thomas had 44 assists in the match as part of her 61 on
the night. Kaylie
Clark led the defense with 32 digs, while Jennifer
LaRoque added four total blocks at the net.
The two losses leave the Cougars with five setbacks in their last
six matches, including two in five sets after leading 2-1 each
time. Things don't get much easier this weekend as they head to
league leading Northwestern on Oct. 21 to continue UMAC play.
The first serve with the Eagles is set for 5:30 p.m., with the UMM
also taking on UW-Stout right after at 7:00 p.m.
