New Paltz Uses Balanced Attack to Sweep Montclair State, 3-0

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After going 1-3 last
weekend, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's
volleyball team (2-3) got back to its winning ways on Wednesday
evening, prevailing by a count of 3-0 (25-6, 25-17, 25-15) against
Montclair State University (3-2) in non-conference action at the
Hawk Center. With the victory, the Hawks extended their home
winning streak to 33 matches, which dates back to 2006.
New Paltz set the tone in the first set and carried that momentum
throughout the remainder of the contest. In the first stanza, the
Hawks hit at a .458 clip, notching 11 kills in 24 total attempts
with no attack errors. In addition, they boasted a sideout
percentage of 85 percent. They went on to hit .200 and .375 in the
second and third sets to finish the evening at .330.
Freshman outside hitter Bridget
Haggerty (Troy, N.Y./Troy) drew her first collegiate
start and helped pace the attack, recording a match-high seven
kills and compiling a .467 hitting percentage. Senior outside
hitter Melinda
DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) hit .545
in just two sets of action with six kills on the night.
Defensively, sophomore libero Carrie
Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) posted a match-high
17 digs, while junior middle hitter Laura
Stanhewicz (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) fueled the
front row with three block assists. The setters also performed well
in the 6-2 offense, with sophomore setter Marissa
King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) dishing out
a match-high 17 assists and sophomore setter Brigid
Moore (Victor, N.Y./Victor) handing out 15.
For Montclair State, Marta Topor and Megan Cockcroft each floored
a team-high four kills, while Angela Campo distributed 14 assists.
Kaitlyn Irwin registered 10 digs, while Topor corralled two block
assists.
New Paltz returns to action on Friday, Sept. 9, at the Elmira
Tournament in Elmira, N.Y. The Hawks' weekend starts with a 5 p.m.
bout against Houghton College at 5 p.m.
