Old Westbury Trumps Medgar Evers at Home

– The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team
claimed a three-set victory over the visiting Medgar Evers Cougars
Thursday evening at home from the Clark Athletic Center. The
Panthers claimed the three set victory 25-10, 25-14, 25-22, to earn
its eighth sweep of the year, snapping their four-match losing
streak. The win improves Old Westbury to 14-10 on the season,
while denying Medgar Evers its first win, moving the Cougars to
0-15.
Ruth
Vargas's nine kills for the match led a balanced Panther
attack, as Ashley
Greene followed with seven kills while Tynisha
George and Kristina
Giordano each nailed down six. Nancy
Apollonio served up a personal-best seven aces to lead
Old Westbury. Kristina
Giordano captained the offense with 22 assists while
Kimberly
Catania, Tynisha
George and Shakira
Canty paced the defense with six digs each. Ruth
Vargas chipped in with 1.5 blocks.
Yvanna Jack led Medgar Evers with five kills and seven digs while
Ann Marie Memberry had two aces.
Old Westbury came out on top after outhitting Medgar Evers .125 to
-.054 for the match, including .286 to .000 in the
opening-set. OW finished with 33 kills, 23 errors and 80
total attacks to go along with 13 aces and three blocks.
Meanwhile, Medgar Evers earned 12 kills, 15 errors and 56 total
attacks in addition to three aces. The Panthers scooped up 30
defensive digs, while the Cougars collected 21 digs during the
match.
ST. JOSEPH'S-L.I. TOURNAMENT UP NEXT FOR THE
PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court for the St.
Joseph's-L.I. Tournament on Friday (Oct. 14) and Saturday (Oct. 15)
in Patchogue, New York. On Friday, Old Westbury takes on
Ramapo at 6 p.m. followed by Sarah Lawrence at 8 p.m. from the
Danzi Center. Old Westbury tangles with CCNY on Saturday at 2
p.m. with the Championship / Consolation match set for 4
p.m.
