White Leaves Schreiner to Become Assistant Director of Spire

KERRVILLE, TX -- Schreiner Volleyball head coach Phillip White has announced that he is leaving the program to take a job as the Assistant Director of Volleyball with the Spire Institute - the nation's first volleyball academy, effective January 1, 2012.

Calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", White said that he hated to leave the program that he has guided since the summer of 2008, but through this position he will have the chance to work with top teams on the national level.

"It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to inform you that I will be leaving my position at Schreiner University.  I have absolutely enjoyed my four seasons at SU and will always think fondly of the enthusiastic and dedicated players I coached, the wonderful parents I met and the top notch fellow coaches and administration members that I have had the pleasure to work with and know.

I have been offered a wonderful opportunity that I can not pass up.  Please know, however, that I did not make this decision lightly.  Schreiner University is a special place and I will always be thankful that I had the pleasure of getting to know such kind and generous people.  This opportunity will allow me to teach the game of volleyball and coach year round.  As you know, volleyball is my passion and having the opportunity to work with some of the nation’s best players is a dream realized."

This position brings White back in touch with his former head coach at Long Beach State, Alan Knipe.  Knipe is now the head coach for the United States Olympic Men's Volleyball team and White will now work for his right hand man, John Hawks, who is the former assistant men's coach at both USC and LBSU.  Through his work at Spire, White will have a chance to work with the players on all three U.S. national teams.

"We'll greatly miss Coach White and thank him for his outstanding work in leading our program at SU.  He's been a great addition to our staff and a great leader of our team.  He'll be very hard to replace but we will start a search immediately in an attempt to find a great coach who will build upon all of Phillip's efforts.  We wish him great success and happiness in this new opportunity," said Schreiner Director of Athletics Ron Macosko.
