Schreiner Evens ASC Record With 3-0 Win Over HPU

KERRVILLE, TX --  Schreiner Volleyball rallied to beat Howard Payne in each of the final two sets to score a 3-0 win and evened their ASC record at 1-1.  The Mountaineers dominated the first set, 25-14 but had much more trouble with the Yellow Jackets (0-2 in ASC) in the next two games.

SU outscored HPU 13-6 after establishing a 12-8 early lead in set one.  In set two, Schreiner fell behind 15-18.  On that play, freshman Ashley Lyles dove after a ball and hit her head against the bleachers.  The extra effort inspired her and her teammates to a 7-2 run.  The final point in the run was key as both teams volleyed back and forth.  Sophomore Jamie Burns actually deflected a shot off her face and kept it in play and SU eventually won the point, igniting the crowd.  Schreiner took advantage of a late HPU service error and won 25-22.

In set #3, SU led early, 8-5 bit saw the visitors take a 16-11 lead.  SU scored six of the next seven points and it was 17-all.  SU fell behind 21-19.  Lyles again came up big with two kills to even the match at 22-each.  Sophomore Brittney Church's kill made it 23-22.  After a Schreiner service error made it 24-23 with the crowd on it's feet, HPU served out of bounds to give Schreiner the 25-23 win and 3-0 sweep.

Coach Phillip White on the match:  "We had a theme all week in our practice gym to make the plays we were supposed to make, individually and as a team.  I thought everybody played well, it would be tough to single out anybody because we played together."

Lyles had a match-leading 12 kills.  Sophomore Brittany Boyett added 8.  Sophomore Jaemi Groves had 29 assists and Burns had 12 digs and Lyles had 11.  Church was tops with a .385 attack percentage.

Schreiner's next match is also at Edington Center and will be on Tuesday (9/20) at 7:00 pm vs. Concordia-TX.  It will be the team's final home match for one month.
